Each Australian state, territory and New Zealand administers laws relating to electricity safety, supply and efficiency. This legislation also creates systems such as electrical licensing and equipment approvals.
Standards, such as Australian/New Zealand standards, are generally created through Standards Australia. Standards are developed and revised by committees made up of industry, community and government representatives.
Regulators often refer to standards in their legislation as a way of ensuring that technical information and requirements are up to date and common throughout Australia and New Zealand.
No single regulator can change standards outright, but merely influence the process through membership on standards committees. If you wish to comment on standards you may be able to make a submission to the relevant committees – contact Standards Australia for more details.
Standards are available for purchase from SAI Global.
